Using Homemade Skin Lotions
Posted on 15 November 2008 by Dana Prince
Whether you’re fighting stretch marks, dry skin, eczema, acne or some other skin problem or ailment a homemade skin lotion can be helpful. It can help you moisturize your skin and can contain some healing ingredients as well.
Homemade Skin Cream Ingredients
You can buy essential oils for fragrance and for holistic benefits as well and mix them with ingredients to come up with homemade creams, lotions, soaps and body butters.
Vitamin E, cocoa butter and vitamin C can all be helpful ingredients and oils such as coconut or emu oil can be good carriers. Some products lose their effectiveness after mixed so something like ascorbic acid which can help skin significantly may not be easy to use in a homemade cream because it will probably lose its effectiveness.
Skincare Cream Cautions
Be very careful when mixing ingredients together. You’ll find plenty of skin cream recipes online but not all of them are wise to use for everyone. Ingredients can sometimes have adverse reactions on your skin or interact with other herbs or medications you are taking.
Because your skin is your body’s largest organ and the one people see the most, it’s important to be careful with it. Your skin is porous so ingredients you put on it could leach into your body as well.
Even if you read that a skincare recipe is safe, first try putting a small amount on your skin (such as the inside of your wrist) and leaving it for 24 hours to see if you have any reactions before using it on the rest of your body. While it’s not likely that homemade lotions will do drastic things for you such as reverse aging or make stretch marks fade they can be complimentary to your skin care regimen.
